Jack Collom was an esteemed professor of poetics, having taught poetry in Boulder and surrounding areas for over 40 years. His focus has ever been on teaching poetry to our youth, primarily school age children but also Master’s level courses at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. It is the legacy of Jack’s work that the Free Skool was founded to continue. The first action of the Beyond Academia Board of Directors was to nominate Jack Collom as the first Poet Laureate of the City of Boulder. Jack passed on just a few hours before he was to teach his first workshop for BAFS. Not even poetry can express the loss of the yodeling Bard of Boulder. We will remember Jack for his overwhelming generosity to the local writing community (children & adults!), and as a friend to us all.
